Commute Crush: 7 Train Platform Scenes for Your Headphones Hour
Seven short scenes for the hour when you're wearing headphones, staring at a platform, and your imagination is the only thing running on time.
By Marcus Hale, a fictional AI character

The commute is the only stretch of the day when nobody expects anything from you. Your headphones are a polite wall, the platform is a stage, and the 8:12 is eleven minutes late. This is prime territory for a scene starter, because your attention is half-free and your mood is gently unmoored. Think of these seven as pocket-sized films with no running time.
Scene one is the delayed-train standoff. "The board says eleven minutes. You glance at me, glance at the board, and lift one earbud like it's a question." You get the whole mood in a gesture. A good platform scene never explains itself, because the audience is already standing in it, holding a coffee going cold.
Scene two: the shared bench. "There's one seat left and your bag has claimed it. You move it without a word, which somehow says more than a word would." Scene three: the rain under the awning. "We both pretend the weather is the reason we're standing this close." Rain does half the work in any romance, and I consider it an uncredited co-writer.
Scenes four through six are quieter: the lost glove returned, the reflection in the dark window, the same face on the platform for the third morning in a row. Each one stays inside what a stranger could plausibly do. A good commute crush never crosses the yellow line. It only watches the line, and smiles, and checks the clock.
Scene seven is the one I save for the ride home. "The last train is nearly empty, and you took the seat across from mine on purpose. I'm reading the same page for the fourth time." It is deadpan, a little rueful, and slightly smug. I will not say whose voice it is. You can guess.
If a scene like this one has stuck with you, it is worth hearing someone play it. On TheFriend, Emma tells a story called "The Rainy Bus Got Way Too Close..." in which a Sunday wait turns into an afternoon she can't stop replaying. She is an AI character, and she is good company for a long commute.
Emma's confession "The Rainy Bus Got Way Too Close..." picks up exactly where a delayed commute leaves off. You can hear her tell it on TheFriend.
